Global Deposit Return System Platform with Information and Training

About

We are a group of businesses, non-profits, educators and systems thinkers across the consumer goods value chain, academia, financial institutions, and key non-governmental organisations (NGOs) supporting this information and training resource platform supporting the development of effective collection and sorting systems for recovered materials.

Vision

Our resource platforms’ vision is to provide information and training to support a circular economy, where valuable materials never become waste, but are returned and sorted due a simple financial incentive, deposit return systems. This ensures the value of products and materials is retained in the economy.

A sizeable portion of packaging which could be reused or recycled ends up as waste, because it isn’t collected and sorted.

Deposit Return Systems (DRS) are an effective tool to incentivize the collection of reusable and recyclable materials. Deposit Return works best when well established in national legislation, complementing or embedded in Extended Producer Responsibility programs. Effective programs target specific packaging types or products (i.e. beverages bottles, reusable containers) to maximize materials returned for reuse and recycling. Well-designed DRS schemes support the growth of reuse and recycling in practice and at scale, keeping valuable materials in the economy.

Deposit and Return Systems add a small deposit to the cost of products and packaging when sold. The deposit is refunded when packaging is brought back to a collection point. These have demonstrated significant potential in addressing low collection rates by incentivizing the return of packaging materials and preventing litter.

As a supporter of the Global Deposit Return System Resource Platform we aim to:

  • Foster global knowledge exchange on effective deposit return system implementation
  • Bring together experts from diverse regions to share best practices
  • Develop strategies & trainings that grow packaging collection, reuse, and recycling
  • Reduce the environmental impact of packaging waste
  • Increase employment and improve livelihoods in waste management

By creating a shared forum for expertise, we seek to advance packaging solutions that are sustainable and benefit both industry and the environment.
